Best known for his magnificent publication of Sir William Hamilton's Vases in 1766, d'Hancarville also published two pornographic works with illustrations based upon antique gems: Veneres et Priapi ut observantur in gemmis antiquis (c. 1775), later reissued as Monumens de la vie privée des douze Cézars, 1780, and this work, its companion volume.
